How to submit
Send SASE (no postcards) and 3-10 poems or pages of poetry, short essays, short short stories, reviews, that might address the concept of applied poetry, a term coined by the editor around 1980. Jennifer likes letters that are informative and fresh and enjoys establishing relationships with writers, otherwise don't bother with cover letters. We rarely accept rhyme unless fresh, internal, quite slant; don't want sentimentality or trite notions. Formal verse is fine as long as treatment is fresh and concepts are not trite. Those who don't know what's trite are not reading enough. Especially interested in poems of place, the pop culture, social justice and human service, poems that name the people and events of our lives. We like artsy, painterly poems, poetry that is what Picasso is to art. In other words write like Wallace Stevens. Yeh, right, good luck. We like articles on style, poetry projects, how you apply poetry. "Applied poetry" is writing process or the poems themselves that affect our lives, create change, exhibit cognitive/emotional/behavorial/etc. movement within the body of the poem and that can evoke same for the reader. Most importantly, while accomplishing all of that, the poem must succeed as "art." This is not a poetry therapy journal though we have great respect for that field, but see the NAPT for that. Applied Poetry means poetry applied to career, healing, corrections, education, relationships, social concerns, entertainment, news and information, sprituality, environment, justice, life-style. Poetry applied to the times of our lives. You might think that's just about every poem until you're an editor for awhile.

Submissions are destroyed if SASE with ample postage isn't enclosed. Email address does not eliminate the need for SASE but if you have email do include the address regardless. NO POSTCARDS.

Responds overnight unless traveling.
