Kathleen Burgess finishing Reeds and Rushes anthology—

This classy collection, will get attention. All her own taste and choices. Those of us who know Kathleen's
level of work are looking forward to this book with eagerness. The subtle thread of themes will be woven
like a shelf of fine fabrics. Perhaps we're looking at autumn or late summer for this release.

Connie Everett and Steve Abbott

to separately serve as Senior Editors for one new anthology each. Keep your ears tuned.
We need to release 4 more anthologies before starting on new ones.

Salon is back!

Rose Smith returns to lead the 2009 Salon. New season starts Saturday February 2 at MCL
Cafeteria 5240 E. Main St. Columbus. Four new members and counting, this season might be
all the more stellar if YOU join us for just $65/yr, meeting every 1st Saturday for 11 months,
9:30am — 4pm so it's worth a drive. Enjoy the fine art of revision, first and continuing drafts, in a
restaurant meeting room. Break for lunch (dutch treat) where the selections are made from
scratch and varied. Gobs of vegetables, yummy deserts, many entrés. Send an email to Rose at
conversant2@aol.com, include 4 sample poems, letter of interest, and get yourself ready for
this new season of growth and invention. You can't beat the price. An amazing all day workshop.
If you haven't been a member of Salon for awhile, consider attending. No obligation to attend
every session. One session is worth the cost. Out-of-staters welcome.

Cap City Poets first 100 days!

Steve Abbott, Senior Editor, and Connie Everett, associate editor for Cap City Poets report Cap City readings:

9/18 Aeropagitica Books, N.High, Clintonville: Frank Richardson, Liz James, Fred Andrle, Doug Gray
9/25 Westerville Library: Gerry Roscoe, Jim Gorman, Kim Brazwell, Jodi Brown
9/28 Beehive Bookstore, Delaware: Bob Flanagan, John Kneisley, Kip Knott, Terry Hermsen
10/05 High Road Gallery, Worthington: Kathy Fagan, Steve Abbott, Connie Everett
11/10 Worthington Inn: Scott Woods, Jennifer Bosveld, Connie Everett special appearance Mela Kircher

Connie Everett has landed some classy reading venues, well-attended, where nontraditional audiences
both paid attention and purchased this super book. We thank Steve, Connie, and Rose Smith for their
leadership on this project.

Abbott asked The Columbus Public Library Acquisitions Dept. to contact Jennifer to buy a copy
of Cap City Poets and they did, but Jennifer turned that opportunity into a purchase of 22 copies
for every branch library which has already resulted in other sales due to the exposure at the
libraries. Sure, we gave them a deal they couldn't refuse, but that didn't hurt us at all.

HOLIDAYS OVER, let's set up some March-June readings!
We need to organize many more readings around Central Ohio that feature poets who haven't had a
chance to represent their place in Cap City Poets. Let's think South, East, and points beyond.
Spread the word to all CCP poets, "If YOU know a great venue in your neck of the woods, you might
contact Connie Everett, Steve Abbott, or Rose Smith to help set up a Cap City Poets reading
featuring 3 – 14 of those CCP poets."

Retail outlets in unusual areas might want to face-out a high profile supply of CCP near the register,
with a little sign,

"For the 1st time ever—Central Ohio's Best Known
and Best Read Poets! A historical moment in
      regional literature!"

Robert Miltner accepts
Pudding House Senior Editor position

Dr. Robert (Bob) Miltner (Kent State University) joined the Pudding House Team on Thursday, January 22,
here where Pudding cooks. He has a busy schedule at Kent State but gave a valued YES to us as well.
Miltner is one of Jen's favorite poets anywhere and one of our Greatest Hits poets.

Bob has been asked and has accepted with enthusiasm the senior editor position for two anthologies
which he plans to focus on by starting with CALLS. Bob will lead on
. . .and the color of it is. . .
poems by poets raised in Ohio—poems on their childhoods. Poems of place, on the characters and events
of their childhoods and identifiably Ohio, and subjects Bob sees as appropriate for the collection.
There will be a national CALL to the best known poets who were raised in Ohio. They must have spent
a minimum of 5 of their childhood years here, preferably longer. It should be about Ohio and about the poets.

The Farming anthology

Ways of Planting: (working title thanks Doug Swisher). This is a far more ambitious collection
requiring more research, consideration of themes, structure, and that vast number of legal and social issues
that could be part of farming issues. We're thrilled that Connie Willett Everett will assist as Associate Editor.
Both Miltner and Everett have some sterling insight on farm labor, organics, and many social and legal issues
regarding farming. Depending on Robert Pringle's health and continued desire to help on this book, we hope he
will want to hold an asst. or assoc. editor position, as well. Bob Miltner will pick his own project members
from around Canton and Kent State where there is much talent and willingness to serve him in this work. Miltner
is the person for this job.

Doug Swisher will be an exceptional beyond-proofreading proofreader and fact-checker. Doug has
an annoying habit of raising the difficult questions that come from his very broad range of knowledge.

            Send submissions NOW.

And to take over the rest of the project, Steve Abbott will assume his half of the work on

Pudding House Team Supports "Against the War"

John M. Bennett, the Pudding House archivist at The Ohio State University
Libraries Rare Books & Manuscripts person of Luna Bisonte Prods and Lost & Found Times
fame,
called Jen months ago and asked for help for the Poets Against War reading at the new OSU
Urban Arts Center in the old Lazarus Building in downtown Columbus. Oct. 29, Sam Hamill, the head
of Poets Against War, presented in celebration of OSU acquiring his papers from that effort. Pudding
House affiliated poets you know read in honor of this: Kathleen Burgess, Beverly Ziemer, Jerry Roscoe,
Steve Abbott, Jennifer Bosveld, Connie Everett, John M. Bennett, Doug Gray, Frank Richardson, and
others. On Thurs. Oct. 30, 3 PM, in the same space, Sam Hamill, Breyten Breytenbach, and Eleanor
Wilner gave splendid readings of their work. Both were jaw-dropping days.

Could YOU attract an intern?

Any respected literary journal or creative writing program should be able to attract some fine interns from colleges
or high schools like Pudding House has over the past 9 years. Go to your local college/hs internship offices and
explore the possibilities of signing an intern to help with their possibilities and your own programs. Thus far 5 OSU
interns have worked here and around 10 high school students served well over the past 9 years.

Pudding Magazine: changes name, stays the same,
might change editor

Pudding Magazine: The National Journal of Applied Poetry
Delete "International"; add "National". Truth in advertising.

It has been a long time since we went after the international literary scene. I don't
even pretend to know anything about translations or even the life of Americans abroad. I do
America well, travel it near and far, know how to talk the coast-to-coast life in America. We do
still receive many submissions from poets all over the world, but I find myself less likely to
accept their work and the postage is way too steep. I hope I remember to change the masthead
on the next issue. Tell readers to notice and why. The magazine is alive but without promises
about "when." If I should decide some day to let someone else become editor, who's interested?
To be editor of Pudding Magazine would be a mighty fine edition to one's literary resume. The
new editor would have to be in-tune with the 30-year editorial slant here, the idea of the term
"applied poetry," "virtual journalism", ekphrasis (we've published books on all of that), and know
how to carefully win acceptance from both academic and community lit scenes. Can you maintain that?
Who's interested? I'll keep it a secret. Successful candidate will have broad and respected
publication histories, several books and chapbooks released, and a fabulous reputation in poetry
arts, a name at least in the making. Pudding Magazine is a 45-70 page journal focusing on
"applied poetry" with artful material. No photos. Express interest, letter of persuasion, to
Jennifer Bosveld, by U.S. Mail, enclose writing samples, mostly poetry. Pays in copies and reputation.

Income Sources for Pudding House

With about 10 full length books in the line-up, and with the current economy, we can't promise
when any anthology, broadside, or chapbook might be released, but then, we never did. Two new
full length books and over 100 chapbooks have been released in the past 5 months. Profit
from any single title is usually nonexistent or very slim. How do we bring in enough to keep
going? book sales: conference and workshop sales, university classes required and recommended
readings, phone/email/mail orders, author wholesale discounts for readings/all purposes,
library sales, both on-going and unique events, university bookstores non-classroom related,
bookstores retail or short-term placements, friends of author book/chapbook release parties.
Patrons: generous support of individuals—people who want to help out and see Pudding House
books used/read.

Policy, sales related: We favor small independent bookstores and give them good discounts.
We sell prepay, no returns. We do not use Paypal. Payment accepted by: Visa, Mastercard, check,
money order, cash, coins and postage stamps, by phone, email special code, U.S. Mail,
in-person. All sales delivered U.S. Postal Service. Sent priority, express, overnight, if
customer pays for extra service. Re-orders and reprints must be ordered at least 60 days ahead
for timely delivery. If you hear anyone talk about getting more of their chapbooks, warn them
to order now! Authors must submit EDIT COPY of the chapbook for any corrections/changes marked
in red, readable print.

Gene Bradford, Art Director, helps us grow up
as much as pocketbook allows.

When Gene Bradford joined us our capabilities expanded. But the economy just this past fall hit us hard. We have added
a few color magazine covers, produced color broadsides, and three or four full color covers for chapbooks but must say no
to color chapbook covers as a rule and we'll be doing less of that. Thanks to Gene we bought time and kept our oldest
computer in operation since 1998. We use 5 computers and 4 printers. The Pudding House website is provided by Hosting.com
in Tennessee and is in drastic need of updating but I haven't been able to achieve that. Gene is a fine art photographer
and his professional site, www.photo-genesis.net, represents around 60 other photographers worldwide. His new personal fine
art site www.bradfordartphotography.com provides fabulous images but commands professional fine art prices. Poets all over
the world have written ekphrastic poems to his work. Gene has had many well-received solo and group shows. He was part
of a show in Sweden that just came down and once again at Jung Haus in Columbus for the all-member show. He has had several
solo shows. One of his agents to the world is Mac Worthington in the Short North, Columbus. If you own a gallery that exhibits
fine art photography you may access Gene's cyber gallery and "shop." It blows me away every time I go there. Bradford images hold
strict copyright and may not be downloaded or used for any purpose. He is the only one who can legally make a print. Prices
set by Gene's agent, Mac Worthington, may range from $560 to $1500 each. Gene sells on his own as well through
www.photo-penesis.net/gallery.php?galleryid=5628. VISA/MC/PayPal accepted on Photo-Genesis site. j/ed

Welcome Shannon Byers, new OSU Intern

Shannon comes to us from The Ohio State University. She will graduate in
December with an undergrad in English Literature and a specialization in Creative
Writing. Shannon's passions encompass a broad spectrum of interests. Foremost
and of great interest to Pudding House, she is enthralled with poetry. Presently she's
invested in postmodernism's relation to our current digital age and the American poetic
tradition. She, along with two partners, have published a local zine—Machine Zine. This
features not only poetry from Columbus and Cleveland, but social editorials and fine art
pieces as well. Along with her ardor for the literary world Shannon is a member of the
fine artist collective known as Black Sail which is based in Columbus and featuring
roughly 20 members. The group focuses on street art and contemporary means of impacting
an urban audience with fine art appeals.

Shannon holds firm social and political beliefs which allow her to co-exist in the Pudding
House environment and that impact her daily rituals and goals for the future alongside
her work as a writer, publisher, and artist. She is currently looking into possibilities
of graduate programs in Creative Writing and Publishing on the Northwest coast. I'd say
she's perfect for Pudding House right now and has much to offer us. Any of you who might
think of how you might bring something special to her experience here are welcome to make
arrangements to drop in, meet Shannon, and say "by the way. . .." How might YOU inform
Shannon's experience here?

When I asked Shannon what her "daily rituals are," she said "eating vegetarian, attention
to intelligent consumer choices, travel by bicycle, alternative medicines, tv-free
existence—things like that." Currently, Shannon is here on Saturdays, to mid-March,
around noon to 7 pm. She's planning to repeat this internship option for three quarters;
therefore, I'm planning to let her partially edit the next issue of Pudding Magazine,
which most of you know has been half done for a year. Shannon is a joy to be around
and will participate in Salon much of the time during her internship.
